Designing a solution to find a satellite without experience or tools.
Sending an installation tech to every household that orders satellite TV is an expensive investment. Professional installation requires knowledge and complex equipment to point a satellite dish in the correct orientation. Could a user install it instead and be successful?
Defining the future user
Who are you?
Let’s get to work defining the different personalities that may install this new idea. What drives and motivates them? Understanding their mindset may help identify potential solutions.
Road mapping the existing user process
Lets get an in-depth understanding the installation process.
What does an installer do? What skillsets do they have? What special tools do they have that a self installer will not? How can the process be simplified for someone with zero experience?
The Big Idea
How can you find a specific point in space?
You need….The ability to find North, the ability to create a level surface, the correct azimuth (the horizontal angle between a fixed point and an object, usually measured in degrees clockwise from north), the correct tilt, and the correct elevation/altitude.
How can you make all of this complex information transparent to the user?
What if the user could print custom templates that are used to point the dish based on their address?
Could it work?
Defining the solution
We have an idea, now let’s make it work.
Defining the parts that support the function needed to make the big idea a reality. Don’t forget about user assembly and shipping size limitations.
